“He didn’t keep his promise. We covered this last time.” Another broad gesture. “Rebecca—Rachel is her real name, but I can’t get myself to say it—Rebecca outed herself, we tried to bring her in. Arrested her. She escaped prison and poisoned Mozzie so I would help her find what she’d been trying to locate. A blue diamond, same size as the Hope Diamond, worth at least a quarter billion uncut. I found it, palmed it to Peter and got him to run. I tricked her. The FBI came and got her back. Champagne all around, another collar made by their pet criminal.”

"And he was supposed to secure your release for that and he didn't do it and now he's transferring to another city and leaving you there. Does that about cover the scope of his betrayal?" Malcolm asks.

[conning]

“Sure.” He studies the coffee and dots something off its surface with his pinky.

[abrightboy]

“That betrayal. But that wasn’t the first time,” Malcolm muses.

[conning]

Neal gives Malcolm a long, even look. “We could save a lot of time if you just read the file. Does the leaving me after I gave up everything for him part not qualify for a certain threshold of outrage?”

[abrightboy]

“You didn’t want me to read the file,” Malcolm tells him. “And I see you didn’t bring it with you to session.” His condition if Neal wants him to now.

[conning]

“I didn’t know we’d be focusing on historical data. I’ll bring it next time.”

The same bland, dull tone.

[abrightboy]

“Is ‘historical data’ not what you’re so pissed off about? I thought you wanted to hurt them all like they hurt you,” Malcolm notes.

[conning]

A raised eyebrow. “Can I do that here? News to me.”

[abrightboy]

“That just seems to make it super relevant to what you’re dealing with currently. That makes it current data,” Malcolm tells him.

[conning]

“It’s nothing new,” Neal drawls. “Just more of the same. Right? Me trying over and over again to hit their marks, them shifting the cues and then saying it’s my fault.”

[abrightboy]

“That’s a garbage hand. Why don’t you want your freedom now that you can have it?” Malcolm asks.

[conning]

“Mmhm.” He drinks a little more coffee, savoring it a bit this time. “Like I said last time, it remains to be seen if I’ll actually get it or if I’ll be starting the Barge carousel over again with someone less inclined to be generous.”

[abrightboy]

“What does generosity have to do with it? Oh. My deal. Well, if you’re that worried I’m going to swan off at any moment, shouldn’t you be more committed to our work, rather than less? So you can finish it before I leave you high and dry like Peter did. Peter’s deal with you was timed, but here? The pace is only up to how quickly you can do what needs done.”

[conning]

“Maybe.” He meets Malcolm’s eyes, tone and expression still flat. “Maybe I’ll glitch back into existence again and live another few years under the FBI’s thumb and come back someone even worse.”

“How?” Malcolm deadpans. “Is the next phase a hobby of throwing puppies in woodchippers?”

[conning]

Neal finishes his coffee.

[abrightboy]

“You don’t want to talk about the past or the present or the future. What would you like to discuss?” Malcolm asks.

[conning]

“What I want isn’t relevant.” He runs his fingertip around the rim of the mug, ever restless, wishing he had George as a distraction. Knowing not bringing the cat was a good choice on an operational level. “What I feel doesn’t matter. I can go get my file if you’d like to review it.”
