In every conversation we had before the punch she’s the one that kept asking me things. And I only kept talking to her just now because she told me that my inmate retaliated against her and I needed to know about that. That’s not okay. And from what I can tell, because she wasn’t cooperative, there weren’t any other witnesses. But just now, after she hit me, was the only time I pressed. Previously? She ran with every conversation, Steve. Last time we talked, she wanted me to count how many times suspects assaulted me in the field. She was very eager to know about it.

I didn’t tell you to fuck off. I just don’t see what’s complicated. Laura’s mad at the world. She knows a lot of people can’t stand me. She’s not fond of me herself. She was looking for somewhere to put all that pent up rage, so she put it in my face, probably expecting it to be largely socially acceptable in her circles to punch the resident Annoying Jerk. And so it has been. My new inmate saw it happen. In her world, in her way of surviving, loyalty is valued above all else. She saw it as her duty to retaliate for the attack on me - something I hope I’ve dissuaded her of - and so she did that. It’s very simple. Rage and violence and revenge come from the oldest and least evolved part of the brain. But I appreciate you checking in. I signed up for Gaius’ healing after the Lestat thing. Will recommended it. Thanks to Laura, I know it works.

I have some experience with Kikimora and her desire to serve a purpose. I understand why she did it and why she justified it.

She tried to get me punished for staying out too late at night and smoking.

She didn't trust me when I tried to help her survive in that cave because she shot me in the back prior.

I get why she likes you and why she'll do most anything to prove to you that she does.

She's your inmate and I'm not trying to get in the way of anything you're doing.

But I do care.

"I don't think you can really hurt me," Will says, almost gleefully. He calms it down to answer seriously. "But I won't let you hurt me too much, promise. I might like a little pain, myself."

They make it to the door and Will finally releases his hand from Malcolm's shoulder so he can unlock the door. He'll wait until they're inside the cabin and the door is closed before he tries pushing Malcolm up into a nearby wall, shoving him by his shoulders. Think of it as an opening shot, starting this particular race. If he succeeds, he'll be kissing Malcolm fiercely.

Oh, he succeeds. Malcolm hits the wall hard, with a faint grunt of the air being knocked from his lungs for a second and it brings that flush back to his cheeks. He grapples for purchase in Will’s shirt as he kisses him, somewhere between looking for something to grab onto and some way to work it off of him.
