“Yeah. I’m pretty much an expert on bad people and you’re not one,” he replies.

"I feel like a bad person though."

[abrightboy]

"Yeah, well. Bad people don't," he informs her.

[bossyboiler]

"Are you sure?" Because despite what he says she feels like a horrible one.

[abrightboy]

"I literally specialize in the psychology of Very Bad People," he reminds her.

[bossyboiler]

"What if I'm just good at faking it?"

[abrightboy]

Malcolm laughs.

"Sure," he says lightly. "That's a thing."

[bossyboiler]

"You're laughing at me?" Kate stands up. "Here I am with a genuine worry and concern that I'm a horrible person in disguise and you're sitting there laughing at me?"

[abrightboy]

“Kate,” he says, leaning over with earnest and putting a hand on her arm, “when you say funny things, people are going to laugh.”

"I'm not being funny on purpose, Malcolm. I am expressing genuine fears and concerns to you and you're laughing. You're not being helpful!"

[abrightboy]

“I told you the answer,” he points out. “If you won’t accept it, what do you want me to do?” he asks reasonably.

"I don't know." Kate hangs her head. She really doesn't know what she wants. He doesn't have any reason to lie to her.

[abrightboy]

"You're going to have to just accept it," he tells her. "But it might take you some time. You really wanted to construct a reality around you being a bad person, but since you're not one, it won't hold." He shrugs.

[bossyboiler]

"How do you accept something that you're not sure is true?" She still feels like a terrible person.

[abrightboy]

"Think about how much evidence supports it compared to something people believe in easily without any tangible proof," he offers. "Like Santa or... God."

[bossyboiler]

"I never was a Believer, Malcolm." She doesn't disbelieve in God but she doesn't disbelieve either. "Logically..." She begins, "I think that you're right but my feelings don't agree with that."

[abrightboy]

He nods.

"Yeah. Feelings are like that."

[bossyboiler]

"Feelings suck."

[abrightboy]

"They have their uses. Some of them are nice," Malcolm points out.

[bossyboiler]

"If you say so." Not everyone had their own Neal to gush over.

[abrightboy]

He didn't think he ever would. Now he has to believe everyone could.
