I was away when they happened, I only learned about them a little while ago.

What did they take? When did you find out who did it?

They took some of my medication and a decanter of scotch. I found out who it was pretty quickly. Her Warden must have caught her right afterwards.

How do you feel about how it was handled?

Do you mean her punishment?

Yeah.

I kind of know her, so I gave her my own assignment on empathy.

What do you mean?

There are a lot of things she does impulsively, without any regard for how they affect other people. I asked her to put herself in the shoes of each of the people she robbed and think about how she would feel in their place.

Was she able to do it? Or do you think she will? She...wasn't exactly empathetic when I spoke to her.

[But the idea of empathy being something one can learn is exciting to Lark who, well, struggles with genuine empathy.]

She wants my approval, so she'll at least try, which is the point. I'll let you know when she gets back to me that she's finished.

I hunt murderers, actually. Not, like, with a gun. I’m sort of a detective. I do consulting for the police.

So you're good at spotting red flags in people?

[abrightboy]

Better than good, if I'm honest.

What job have you taken?

There weren’t any spots available in the counselling office. I’ve helped out here and there as needed, but I have a temporary inmate so I’m mostly focusing on that.

[Bah, Lark doesn't believe in half the assigned roles. If you're right for the job it doesn't matter if it's really your name on the door.] Care to give me an example of your work?

I want to know how well you can read people before I recommend you to my people.

To which people? For what? Sorry, I didn’t realize this was a job interview.

My inmates. My packmates.

...Do you only want the role of counselor if the Admiral agrees that's what you are?

[abrightboy]

…No. Although… is it still called a job then or is it more of a hobby?

[He laughs] If it is, you don't say it out loud. People don't like being referred to as hobbies.
