Or… you could say “I did some terrible things while I was brainwashed by Belos, but I truly regret petrifying your mother and I hope some day you can find it in your heart to accept my sincere apology.”

I'm sure that works in the human realm, but in the demon realm, that's spitting on their mother's grave.

How do you make amends in your world?

Well, you don’t want to kill them anymore, so why not make such a pact and secure your safety?

Because they may not agree to it, and luring me out on a false premise only to kill me is a very coven-like thing to do.

Then it isn't the very best system of atonement, is it? Maybe you could come up with something better than a constant cycle of betrayal and revenge.

"No one listens to me. Only when I'm a threat do they ever stop laughing behind their stupid fake faces."

"Maybe that's where we have to start doing serious work for your graduation," Malcolm tells her. "That anger. That resentment. Is that what made you want to be so high in Belos' service? Wanting to wipe the laughter off their stupid fake faces for good?" He raises his eyebrows slightly. "It would be very understandable, getting tired of being treated like a joke." He splays his hand on his own chest. "I do know."

She waits, to see if this is a trap to lure her in, before finally giving a slow nod.

"Yes." Kikimora admits, soft but dangerously. "I..don't get along with many of my fellow witches and demons. Most think size is attributable to power."

Malcolm smiles down at the counter.

"I know that story, yeah. But... they're wrong. You obviously proved that much. So... what you actually want when you go home is just... respect. Respect as a being; respect as a witch."

Another short nod, as she hides her face from Malcolm, struggling to come to terms with this. It's so stupidly simple but she's never been respected, only occasionally feared.

"That's nothing to be ashamed of. It's the least anyone should expect. But it can be hard, when... societal misconceptions make people think less of you before they even know you," Malcolm acknowledges. He pauses, watching her for a moment. "...I respect you, you know. You have a good heart. You always do your best. You're willing to learn new things. You like animals. ...And I really enjoy your sense of humour."

"I don't HAVE a sense of humor." She insists, embarrassed, like it's some weakness she has to overcome.

It's a good distraction. Because the rest of it is making her face go bright red.

“You do, and it’s delightfully caustic,” Malcolm informs her.

"...No one's ever told me that before. I suppose I just..well, it helps me get through the rougher days, back home."

“Well, you can use that power to get us both through the rougher days here,” Malcolm suggests with a grin.

"Ugh. That was terrible, even for you, Warden."

“Thank you. I’m doing my best to develop what humans refer to as ‘dad humour’,” he jokes. “Anyway, speaking of respect, I think you should change jobs. Think about where you can work on the ship where you can interact with people more. They need to have a chance to talk to you, first of all.”

"I would like to change jobs too." She counters. "I have it narrowed to several options. Would you like me to think on them more first and come back to you with a proposal?"

“I think that’s a good idea. But it’s okay if you don’t have it narrowed down to just one at that point and you want to talk it out,” Malcolm tells her.
