"Okay, I'm going to ask a question and I'm really asking so don't get defensive okay? ...How can you tell?" Malcolm asks.

"How can I tell what?" he huffs. "If he's being an ass to me? He does that nice and polite shit. Calls me Mr. Kinderwellen. Treats me like he does everyone else."

"Oh, okay. I'm only familiar with that sort of behaviour from him. So... affection has looked like... broken fingers?" Malcolm clarifies.

"Sometimes. Or - it looks like him complaining to me. Taking to me. Being - fucking normal. He doesn't act that way around me," he explains.

“Until you graduated?” Malcolm surmises. “Because he’s jealous and scared of losing you? I think you shouldn’t take too long to address this.”

He pulls his glass close again and refills it with a groan. "You are so fucking annoying. I'll talk to him," he complains. "Why is this so important anyway?"

"Because people like us can't just make more friends. The sort of people we can connect with and who will understand us are... rare," Malcolm tells him. "Precious."

"That doesn't mean that we have to hold onto friends who treat us like shit," he says firmly.

[abrightboy]

“It doesn’t, if that’s what’s happening. But sometimes hurt people hurt people. A good friend wants to help. That’s when someone you care about needs you the most,” Malcolm says.

He rolls his eyes again. "Are we finished talking about me?" he huffs. "Tell me something stupid you've done this week. I'm certain there are dozens to choose from."

“This week? Um. …I got in another argument with Eiffel and broke everything Neal helped fix with us because he says I have no feelings and should fake it? Does that count?” Malcolm asks.

Johann frowns. "That's stupid. You have a lot of feelings."

[abrightboy]

“Too many, most of the time!” Malcolm agrees.

[monsterjohann]

"So what did you say to him?" he laughs.

[abrightboy]

"I told him that isn't my problem, but I don't know if he... accepted that. We went off on a different tangent about his breach family and how I was in it in the last breach but pointed out that - as I told Shaw - I don't intend to impose myself there in real life. Apparently Shaw was upset when I said that so it started a whole different argument," Malcolm explains.

Johann just raises his eyebrows.

"That sounds like a fucking mess of a situation. Why is everything in this ship so damn complicated?"

Malcolm tilts his head and shrugs.

"Short answer: emotions?"

[monsterjohann]

"I suppose. They should all be like me," he laughs.

[abrightboy]

"Expressing themselves through violence and insults in lieu of healthy mechanisms to process what they feel? That's how you and Sebastian got into this whole mess," Malcolm points out, taking a sip of his drink and quite pleased with himself for bringing the whole thing back around to topic.

Johann has learned a lot of very good things on board. Lots of new foods, new phrases, new everything.

He utilizes his favorite new skill and flips Malcolm the bird while he drinks.

Malcolm grins.

"I was hoping that one would get me a well-earned 'fuck off," he teases.
