"Oh sure, but it didn't win me any points towards people not worrying that I was the violent kind of crazy." And his attitude hadn't helped either. He'd been rather angry. A lot. Because no one believed him.

"Anyways, that's...that's why I had a social worker, and then I didn't. Fun story." He'll pick his coffee back up and take a long drink from it. "Any more questions rattling around in your little head?"

"So you can see ghosts because you had a near death experience?" Malcolm clarifies.

"Uh...naw. I've seen things most of my life, just never really interacted with them. Anyone can see the paranormal, they just don't choose to usually. Honestly it's more safe that way. You dont want the paranormal to look at you closely either." At least where he comes from.

"Why did you cut yourself open?" Malcolm asks curiously.

Hanna is quiet a moment. He'd told a few people recently, more than he ever thought would know, had given that part of his file back to Taylor. It didn't feel better, in fact sometimes he questioned if he should have at all, but every day that passes that it doesn't bite him in the ass, he can relax just a smidgen more.

"I tried not to. But I wasn't exactly guiding my hands at that moment."

"...You were possessed?" Malcolm asks.

He gives a little nod, another sip of coffee.

"Bingo. You win a prize." He is curious though, glancing up at him, "that shit real where you come from, Malcolm."

"No. But when you're a traumatized teen with no friends, you watch a lot of horror flicks. Why did the thing in you want to kill its host?" Malcolm asks.

Hanna's grip on his cup tightens.

"She wasn't a thing, she was a person."

"She was? What was her name?" Malcolm asks.

"Of course she was! Ghosts come from somewhere, Malcolm. They don't just magically appear, they're people who died, usually violently and they're confused and scared." He sucks in a deep breath, trying to calm himself down.

"Give me a minute, I need to remind myself you're not saying stupid shit on purpose."

"I just thought that it was demons that possessed people," Malcolm tells him.

Hanna groans, "Okay, so those definitely can too, but I've never seen one. And demons are people too unless you want to tell me you have some really uncomfy and nasty things to say about our resident demons. There are like...four of them now, aren't there?" Not including the sinners he thinks his math is right.

“So…. What’s the generic pronoun for a demon whose gender is unknown? They/them?” Malcolm asks.

Hanna stares at Malcolm a moment, opens his mouth, closes it, opens it again, "why the hell should I know? I think you're supposed to ask, right? I mean, people ask me sometimes, but not as nicely as that..."

Maybe that etiquette gets better after 2009.

“So…what is the correct way to rephrase that question?” Malcolm asks.

Proper nouns, Malcolm. It takes him a moment to get why he's asking, but he gets there eventually.

"Why did the ghost want to their host probably works if- if you don't know."

It's almost charming the way he circles back around and Hanna has to huff a soft laugh, shaking his head, "because she loved me, obviously."

“So she wanted you to be on the other side with her?” Malcolm guesses.

"Emotions get corrupted in death. Sometimes a lot, sometimes a little. I think that's why Dad just watched. He wanted what she wanted, but her logic, how to get it, was...twisted. When i said no, he accepted that and didnt try and finish the job when it forced her out." he explains quietly before finishing his cup of coffee.

And while he hadn't answered Malcolm's question of what her name was, he at least hopes that he can put the pieces all together easily now with what he knows to fill in some gaps.

"...How did your parents die?" Malcolm asks cautiously.

"Second to last one," Hanna warns, fingers tight around his now empty cup.

He's got a lot battery for this kind of shit, though at the very least he feels he's done well enough to not be an ass about it. He does look frustrated by the question, though not at him, more what he knows he's going to have to say.

"Robbery gone wrong. Basically a random act of violence. Made it difficult to find him too, but eventually they did, he was convicted after about a year and some change."
